| Eric Madis began martial arts study in 1963 while growing up in rural Colorado. His formal training began during the summers of 1964-65, learning Goju-ryu karate under Shihan Frank Goody. Between 1965 and 1983, he studied multiple disciplines: judo (Northglenn Judo Club), military police self-defense (University of Illinois), aikido (Denver Aikidokai/Master Gaku Homma) and karate/kickboxing (Rich McMillan). His tangsoodo training began in 1983 under Grandmaster Jung Kil Kim and senior instructor Master Jung Lee. He then taught and trained under the late Grandmaster Jae Joon Kim, earning 2nd dan (MooDukKwan Dan Bon #15710) and his teaching certificate. After an invitation by Master Dennis McHenry in 2000, he became a member of the United States Korean Martial Arts Federation from 2000-2020. Over the years he has also trained with tangsoodo Masters Dennis McHenry, Mike Shintaku, Eric Kim and Robert Davis, aikido Master Bruce Bookman and ITF taekwondo Master Nhumey Tropp. Mr. Madis has a B.A. in physiological psychology from the University of Illinois (1975). He is a published martial arts historian, was honored by the International Ryukyu Karate Research Society with awards in 2014 for Martial Arts Writer of the Year and in 2025 for Lifetime Achievement. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
